Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing VAC (AC input) with DC rails. VAC values describe wall power; rails are DC outputs. Do not mix them when determining compatibility. - Assuming all PSUs auto-switch between 110-120 and 220-240 VAC.
- Confusing connector shapes: the 20+4 main connector is large; the CPU 4/8-pin connectors are separate and smaller. - Assuming modular PSUs are inherently higher quality; modularity is about cable routing, not necessarily electrical specs.
- Relying solely on a large wattage label (e.g., 1000W) without checking efficiency or rail ratings; a high-wattage, low-efficiency PSU can be a poor choice.
- Believing bigger fans always cool better; airflow direction, static pressure, and mounting location affect real-world cooling. - Over-application of thermal paste expecting improved cooling; proper thin layer is sufficient.
