Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up the letter names with relative speed: letters do not encode throughput exactly, but later letters tend to indicate newer/typically faster standards. "ac" and "ax" are newer than "n".
- Thinking wider channel width always equals better user experience; in congested areas wider channels can worsen interference and reduce overall throughput. - Believing 5 GHz is always better; if range is required, 2.4 GHz may be the sensible choice.
- Equating WPA2 with being perfectly secure; while acceptable for many consumer scenarios, WPA3 offers improved protections. - Thinking password change on the router will automatically update client saved profiles; clients must re-enter the new passphrase.
- Assuming the device will automatically pick the correct band; users may need to choose between "NetworkName_2.4G" and "NetworkName_5G" if the AP exposes band-specific SSIDs. - Thinking hidden SSID increases security; it primarily causes usability issues.
